Virtual Reality: Truth-Telling Through Story, Place and Technology

Experience History Through Virtual Reality – Walk Through Former Mission Sites

YOKAI’s immersive Virtual Reality experiences allow visitors to explore digitally reconstructed mission and institutional sites where many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children were taken after being removed from their families.

Using historical records, photographs, maps, and community consultation, these environments provide a powerful opportunity to understand the places where children lived, learned, and experienced separation from their families and culture.

As you move through each location, you can:

  • Explore key buildings and landscapes

  • Learn about the history of each site

  • View archival photographs and documents

  • Hear stories from survivors, Elders, and descendants

  • Understand the lasting impacts of removal policies on individuals and communities

These experiences are designed as educational and truth-telling tools that place First Nations voices at the centre of the narrative.

Listen to Stories of Survival and Strength

At the heart of this experience are the voices of people who lived through these events.

Through recorded interviews, oral histories, and community storytelling, visitors can hear firsthand accounts

Documentaries: Genocide in the wildflower state & (new one?)

Why Truth-Telling Matters

Truth-telling is about acknowledging history honestly and respectfully.

By listening to survivors, engaging with historical evidence, and learning from First Nations communities, we can foster greater
understanding, empathy, and reconciliation.

These digital experiences and documentary resources have been developed to support education, reflection, and meaningful
conversations about Australia’s past and its future.
