WA Stolen Generations Redress Announcement
“A Historic Step Toward Justice for WA’s Stolen Generations Survivors”
A major milestone has been reached for the Stolen Generations survivors of Western Australia. On May 27th 2025, Premier Roger Cook announced that all Stolen Generations survivors will soon be eligible for compensation — a long-awaited act of recognition, justice, and healing that YOKAI has advocated many years for.
The redress scheme marks a significant step forward in addressing the enduring trauma and suffering caused by the forced removal of Aboriginal children from their families, country & community — a policy that devastated generations and left deep scars across communities.
YOKAI’s own Tony (Tonji) Hansen, a Stolen Generations survivor and Co-Chair of Bringing Them Home WA, welcomed the announcement.
“By acknowledging such a brutal history and the evil policies that ripped the hearts out of children and families, this day will go down in history as a powerful moment of truth-telling,” he said in an interview with SBS.
The announcement was made in front of Parliament House in Perth, on what was a deeply emotional day for many. YOKAI members stood in solidarity, reflecting on the pain of the past while looking forward to the future.
This announcement is a crucial step on the path to truth, justice, and healing — a commitment to never forget and to move forward with dignity.
